    BREAD: SYMBOL OF LIFE

Bread is one of the major symbols of Christian worship and is also one of the world’s staple foods. The “staff of life” has been a major part of my artwork over the past 12 months. I looked at bread as a landscape object and a Christian symbol. In the four examples of drawing today I have tried to blend both themes.

    From the Top: “Living Water”

    “Sacred Sacrament 2.”

    “Sacred Sacrament 1.”

    “Wholemeal Landscape, Northern Tasmania”

In Christian worship , bread symbolises the body of Christ which along with wine (the blood of Christ) are the ingredients of Holy Communion. In the church I attend we use grape juice for wine and small pieces of bread.

I have enjoyed the challenge of working with bread as a theme. Symbolism is a fascinating source of inspiration and is worthy of research as history has a lot to offer the artist for inspiration.
