CURATING

MARGARET BAKERThis morning I hung an exhibition of paintings by a dear friend of mine, Launceston artist Margaret Baker.

This collection of work is in a cafe which is a very different location to a designated gallery. People who view Margaret’s work will be drinking , eating and chatting, while the art provides the background and atmosphere.

Cafes are a great place for artists to show their work without the expense of a full-blown exhibition in a gallery. The cafe in question usually shows 12 -15 artworks in a well-lit, modern venue.

I find such venues for hanging art a somewhat hit-or-miss venture. Unlike a gallery, patrons are not there to buy art. It is encouraging to note that artwork does sell at such a venture. Things have been quiet lately, but I’m sure they will pick up soon.
