Last week my eldest stepson Matthew, chain-sawed the top off a stump in the vegetable garden. After he had completed the task, Matthew commented that the pattern reminded him of a chess board. I too, had a similar idea, having drawn several chess boards as part of a surreal series of landscapes.
Naturally, I photographed the stump and set up some ‘chess pieces’ and left them there and photographed them over the next week. I let the weather and our 3 chickens (who were allowed to roam the vegetable patch) to ‘influence’ the objects.
I intend to leave the objects and wait for some rain.
I hope to produce at least one drawing from this ‘experiment’.

A fascinating series of photos, Richard, enhanced by those long shadows. Clever!
Thanks Gillian. I have more to come!
