Today I am judging the Launceston Art Society’s Annual Acquisitive Award (Triple A) with my good friend, Launceston artist Edna Broad.
I was fortunate enough to win last year’s award (today’s featured artwork) and offered to be a judge for this year.
Sometimes there are set criteria that one must use, but in most cases the judges can decide what they will look for when assessing the merits of work worthy of a prize or commendation.
Personally, I look for command of technique, respect for the medium, composition, what the painting is ‘saying’ and lastly, but by no means least, something extraordinary, not ordinary.
I shall post a report next week of the outcome of the art award.
