For the past week I have been working on a drawing that I hoped would be good (clever) enough to enter in either the Dobell Prize for Drawing or the Glover Prize.

Tattooed Rock, Sisters Beach, is the pattern that I saw on a rock that I think looks rather special and tells many stories.

80 x 60 cm, Prismacolor pencils on Canson Pastel Board.

I’m enjoying the process of creating this drawing and still have detail to add, but I’ve decided that it won’t be good enough to enter in either of these prestigious art prizes. When I have completed this drawing I will probably include it in my exhibition at the Providore Mill & Art Gallery in Launceston in March 2013.

When entering art awards it’s essential to produce artwork that will catch the judges’ eyes through its meaning, visual content and arrangement and its presentation.

I have other ideas waiting to be developed. Maybe one of those will make the grade.
