I have decided to do one more drawing before we leave Cairns, so it was inevitable that it would be one from my recent trip to Darwin.

I can’t believe how stunning the rocks were that I photographed there.

These are quite different to what I usually draw. They are even more removed from the wonderful examples that come from April Jarocka and Ester Roi, two artists whose work I really admire.

These are dry rocks with a ‘velvet’ finish. Light and shadow prevails, but so do many clear and precise abstract marks. Some of the colours are quite strong.

This is challenging stuff, but I love this sort of work as it  takes me out of my comfort zone.

One needs to ‘grow’ as an artist.

More on Friday.

Richard, you said it right – one needs to ‘grow” as an artist. I too believe that the best way to grow is to keep challenging oneself and take risks. I admire you because you always push the limits.

Thank you, Ester, I am mindful of becoming a ‘rubber-stamp’ artist, so I try to extend my vocabulary from time to time. ‘Rocks’ as a subject have so much potential.

I love the abstract nature of nature!! Rock on!!

  3. Beautiful work, Richard. And thank you for the mention. Ditto ~ I love that our work (all three of us) really varies! I feel that stones really push me as an artist to grow too. Good luck with this one!
