One way that I avoid that situation occurring is to have some ideas on ‘standby’. I have rather a large collection of A4-size photos that I have printed as the result of my many trips.
If I am ever short of inspiration I pick up one or more of the piles of photos and slowly sort through the collection and find a photo or two, that take my fancy. Then it’s away to the drawing table!
My latest ‘idea’ has seen the creation of a rock nursery (actually I have 2) that is (at times) completely covered in water and littered with some of the beautiful stones that I have collected over several years.
This collection is often added to or deleted. I also re-arrange the rocks, thereby creating new and interesting compositions. I often photograph the collection at certain times of the day depending on the light conditions.
As you can see, I have included some of my latest photos.
If I want to paint on a day when I’m not really sure on what I want subject-wise, I can always find something of interest in either of my ‘rock nursery’!
